The death of a baby is being investigated in Meriwether County.
On Wednesday, August 15, the Greenville Police Department requested the GBI conduct a child-death investigation of 10-month-old Ayla Reeves.
The baby was found during a traffic stop by Greenville police at around 11:15 a.m. when police stopped 22-year-old Cameron Ramon Reece for speeding, according to the GBI.
Police said the child was found deceased in the vehicle as Reece fled.
An investigation reveals that Reece was keeping the baby and contacted the baby’s mother, Nikia Reeves, 19, and stated the baby was not breathing. When Nikia Reeves arrived at Reece’s location at the Greenville Commons, she became suspicious of his behavior.
Nikia Reeves along with Reece and her baby then got into the car Reece was driving. She questioned Reece about a mark under the baby’s eye. Authorities say during the encounter, Reece pulled out a steak knife which led to Nikia Reeves jumping out of the vehicle.
Subsequently, the Meriwether Sheriff’s Office received a call about a stolen baby.
Reece was then tracked by a Department of Corrections canine in the 700 block of North Depot Street and detained.
Reece has been charged with aggravated assault and concealing the death of another.
The cause of baby Ayla Reeves' death is pending GBI autopsy. The investigation is active.
