Linard (Lin) F. Holcomb, USMC Retired, 76, died peacefully in his sleep, with his wife of 56 years at his side, at the Brightmoor Hospice Center, in Griffin, Georgia, on June 26, 2018.
A Combat Veteran with two tours in Vietnam, Lin was a Marine’s Marine. Lin entered the Marine Corps in 1959 and retired in 1980, with 21 years of faithful service to the United States Marine Corps and retired as a Master Sargent. For the last 23 years, Master Sargent Linard Holcomb has been affectionately known to everyone as Granddaddy.
Granddaddy was a brave and loyal Marine, as well as a patient and loving father and husband. Granddaddy married his sweetheart, Margaret Rebecca Branham Holcomb, in 1962 in Port Royal, South Carolina.
Granddaddy is survived by his wife; two sons, David Lee and Donald Lin; grandson, Christopher Lin; sisters, Eloise West, Ann Rice, Juanita Smith and his brother Floyd Joseph Holcomb.
He is preceded in death by his parents Lee Vester Holcomb and Annie Lois Hammett Holcomb; his brother, Wilford Lee Holcomb; and his sisters, Marcell Drennen, Marjo Holcomb Rice, Ann Holcomb Rice, Mary Patterson and Reba Joyce Holcomb.
After retiring from the Marine Corps, Granddaddy graduated from Saint Leo College in 1988 and worked for the Coweta County Public Works, retiring in 2008. Granddaddy was very active in his community, serving as Scout Leader for the Boy Scouts of America, and guided his grandson to his Eagle Scout. After scouting, Granddaddy continued to serve his community and fellow veterans as a member of the Patriot Guard Riders and as a member of the Southern Cruisers Riding Club Chapter 186, raising money for Saint Jude’s Research Hospital.
Granddaddy enjoyed leather working, working in his garden and riding his Honda VTX motorcycle, Betsy, with his motorcycle family. Those that knew Granddaddy say he was a good man, a gentle man, would give you the shirt of his back, and spoke highly of him.
Granddaddy will be taking his last ride with his motorcycle family on July 14, 2018, ending up at the Coweta Veteran’s Club at 130 Veterans Club Road, Newnan, Ga., 30263, for his celebration of life at approximately 2 p.m.
