I am writing in regard to the W.J. Butcher opinion piece you published July 6.
Mr. Butcher in his article makes continuous false comparisons between immigrant parents and criminals. It is not a crime to be an asylum seeker, and their children are being removed from them to deter their seeking asylum and to intimidate them, not because the asylum seekers are criminals.
Mr. Butcher compares the "compassionate Border Control Agents" (his words) to himself, when as a police officer he encountered abusive or criminal American parents. This is obviously false, since no one who reads the news has observed any compassion on the part of immigration authorities when they remove children from their parents.
Mr. Butcher is exaggerating the criminal aspect of the immigration situation and trying to create fear and hatred of immigrants in this column. He ought to be ashamed of himself.
