COLUMBUS STATE TRIES TO STAY ALIVE IN D-II WORLD SERIES

After back-to-back wins to open the Division II College World Series, Columbus State was denied a trip to the finals in a tough 3-2 loss to Florida Southern in a matchup of the tournament’s No. 1 and No. 2 seeded teams.

No. 2 Columbus State kicked off the double-elimination event with wins over Mercyhurst (8-1) and UC San Diego (6-0) in impressive fashion. The loss sets up a rematch today at 1 p.m., between Columbus State and Florida Southern, which also has one loss, for the chance to move on to the finals against No. 5 seed Augustana (S.D.).

Columbus State’s roster includes junior left-hander and former Newnan Cougars pitcher Sam Sowerbrower who transferred last year following a successful start to his collegiate career at Georgia Highlands.

Augustana has yet to lose in the tournament. The championship is set for Saturday at 3 p.m., with a second game to follow if necessary.

Columbus State’s most recent signing class includes recent Newnan High graduate Will Wilbanks. Both Wilbanks and Sowerbrower are part of this year’s Baseball4Christ mission trip scheduled to leave for Mexico on Saturday.
