Hurley A. Phifer

Hurley A. Phifer died unexpectedly Tuesday morning, June 26, 2018, in Chamberlain, South Dakota.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce Mulford Phifer of Iroquois, South Dakota; his parents, John and Emma Phifer of Fort Mill, South Carolina; his brother, Johnnie Ray Phifer of Fort Mill, South Carolina; and his sister, Margaret Mason of Fort Mill, South Carolina.

He is survived by his daughter and her husband Tracy and David Wright of Whitesburg, Georgia; his son and his wife Dusty and Beth Ann Phifer of Hilliard, Ohio; his granddaughters, Sarah Dean, Chelsea Grasmeier, Emelie Blair and their spouses. Hurley was also especially close to his sister-in-law, Agnes Gilchrist of Cavour, South Dakota; and a special friend Katherine "Kitty" Thompson of Dallas, GA.

Hurley was born in North Carolina on March 7, 1938. He graduated from Fort Mill High School in 1956 as valedictorian. Hurley was a Korean War Air Force veteran, and a retired telecommunications engineer. He was employed by ITT NASA at Kennedy Space Center in Central Florida for 17 years, and later as the lead engineer for the telecommunication upgrade project at Hartsfield-Jackson Airport working with Raytheon and Parsons Corporations before retiring.

His hobbies included skeet shooting for which he held both the Ohio and Georgia state championship titles, traveling, and fishing. It was on a fishing trip to Fort Thompson, South Dakota that he passed unexpectedly.

Visitation is scheduled for Sunday evening, July 1, 2018, from 6-8 p.m., at McKoon Funeral Home in Newnan.

The funeral service will be held in the McKoon Chapel on Monday, July 2, 2018, at 11 a.m.

Following cremation, a private graveside service will be held at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, in Newnan, where he will be buried alongside his wife of 48 years.
