Former Northgate High School right-handed pitcher Blake Whitney was drafted Wednesday in the annual Major League draft by the Chicago Cubs after a four-year career at USC Upstate.
Whitney was selected with the 728 overall pick in the 24th round.
During his high school career at Northgate, Whitney was a three-year letter winner for former head coach Greg Hamilton.
During his senior season at USC Upstate, Whitney started 13 games, and finished with a team low 2.81 ERA while compiling a 5-3 record with one shutout.
In 73.2 innings, he struck out 82 and walked 21.
Whitney led the team in wins, strikeouts and innings pitched in both his junior and senior years.
