Northgate sending five to Class 6A sectional meet

Declan Gresham led five Northgate track athletes who posted qualifying efforts for Saturday's Class 6A State Sectional at Lakewood Stadium.

Gresham advanced in both the discus and shot put while joined by long-distance runners Davis McIntire, Michael Nelson and Matthew Hill among athletes from the Vikings that advanced from last week's Region 5-6A championships in Douglasville.

>span class="Fid_5">Gresham had season bests in both throws to advance to the sectional meet for Northgate's boys, led by a third-place effort of 47 feet, 10 inches in the shot put. He also placed fourth in the discus at the Region 5-6A meet with a top throw of 137-11.

Along with help from efforts by McIntire, Nelson and Hill, the Vikings scored 43 points to finish sixth in the 5-6A boys standings. Host Alexander swept both region titles, with the Cougars scoring 152 ½ points to finish ahead of Mays (137), Douglas County (105), New Manchester (76 ½) and Hughes (60).

Alexander's girls scored a meet-best 178 points. Mays was second with 126 ½, ahead of New Manchester(106 ½), Douglas County (96), South Paulding (35) and Hughes (35).

The Lady Vikings scored

11 points in a seventh- place tie with Creekside and Tri-Cities.

Both McIntire and Nelson also posted thirdplace finishes on the track. McIntire was third in the 1,600 meters at 4:52.97, with Nelson also scoring in the event in fifth-place.

Nelson, however, qualified in the 3,200 along with Hill. The Viking duo placed third and fourth, respectively, with times of 10:41.04 and 10:42.32.

McIntire was also a finalist in the 800, placing seventh behind Northgate teammate William Stephens, who was sixth in 2:09.26.

Chandler Cao also scored twice for the Vikings in the field. He was sixth in the triple jump with a season-best of 41-11 ½ and also seventh in the long jump at 20-6 ½.

Scorers for the Vikings also included Hunter Frederick, who was eighth in the 100 (11.82).

Shaw advanced to the Class 6A-B girls sectionals in the 3,200, placing fourth in 14:03, ahead of teammate Dalia Gibson.

Gibson also scored in the 1,600 for the Lady Vikings, placing eighth while competing with teammate Meagan Ryan. Ana Rudny also contributed with an eighth-place finish in the discus.

Meredith Rielly also placed ninth in the 800 for Northgate's girls, while Guya Farmer competed in the 100.
