James Edward Van Riper II has achieved the rank of corporal in the U.S. Marine Corps.

His new rank became official March 1. Van Riper graduated in the top 5 percent of his company at Parris Island in 2016.

Currently, he is stationed at the Marine Corp Air Station New River with the Phoenix Squadron of Super Stallion heavy lift helicopters. This aircraft is the largest rotating blade aerial lift platform serving U.S. armed forces.

The family of the corporal has a deep and rich history of service in several branches of the U.S.  Armed Forces. His father, James Van Riper; stepmother, Maria Van Riper; and grandmother, Geraldine Van Riper, all live in Newnan.

The corporal’s sister, Jennifer Van Riper, and brother, William Van Riper, reside in the Detroit area.

Van Riper, who attended Central Education Center, is also the son of the late Linda Van Riper Chodorowski.

The corporal’s father said the entire family is “honored by this recent achievement by James.”
