Youth learn skills to cope with stress

Submitted photo

Dara Wells leads several youths through stretching and breathing techniques during a yoga class at the inaugural Kindness Fitness Day. The program was held at the Carnegie Library.

Some area students now have extra knowledge and techniques to use during stressful situations.

The youths learned the skills during the inaugural Kindness Fitness Day on Feb. 3 at the Carnegie Library.

Dara Wells, a dance instructor with the Southern Arc Dance Studio, started the day by showing students some breathing techniques.

Wells, also trained in Tibetan Yoga, taught how to use the techniques when faced with difficult situations.

Students learned how to handle stressful scenarios during sessions of role playing, storytelling, games, arts and crafts and discussion.

The program was led by the nonprofit organization Family Patterns Matter and youth volunteers. The group tackled issues such as bullying, test-taking and feelings of being left out.

Group leaders also stressed the importance of being kind and empathetic towards others.
