Vertie Mae Rogers Brooks first saw the light of day in Heard County, Georgia on May 1, 1936. She was one of 11 children born to the late Looney Monroe and Vertie Ann Medlock Rogers. She would ultimately be the last of her siblings surviving. If you were farmers back in this time, a large family assured that the hard work associated with the farm could be spread out. She acquired her work ethic at an early age as she learned to bring firewood for the stove and fireplace, feed the chickens and help with cooking and canning and tending the garden. These early life lessons would serve her well in years to come as she moved from the farm to the big city of Newnan.
After high school she went to work for a new company in town, International Playtex. It was a career to which she would devote 45 years. In 1996 The Newnan Coweta Chamber of Commerce would present Vertie their Spirit Award. She was given the award based on her superior productivity, but also, the ideals of perfection, teamwork, and being an encourager to those with whom she worked side by side – always setting a high benchmark for their productivity. On September 23, 1988, she married William Nathan Brooks. Theirs was a life of love, spontaneous trips, exploring new places to eat and being a common sight in the downtown area of Newnan where Nathan had his business.
Vertie is survived by her children Greg Blankenship and Pam Wilbur and Greg’s son Daytona Gregory Blankenship. By her marriage to Nathan she acquired three daughters by marriage, Alta Berry, Natalie Thames and Amanda Thomas. Along with these ladies came their children, with whom she bonded, Heather Leeper, Bradley Thames, Kelly McKinney, Ricky Hinshaw and Nick Rasay.
