Local wrestlers qualify for traditional state tournament

Wrestlers from Newnan, East Coweta and Northgate will compete next week at the GHSA traditional state tournament in Macon.

East Coweta and Newnan had a strong showing in the Class AAAAAAA sectionals at Lowndes High School, while Northgate competed at the Class AAAAAA sectionals at Alexander 

Wrestlers had to finish in the top eight of their individual weight classes in order to advance.

Full details were not available by deadline, but most of the qualifying spots had been decided.

Newnan’s Charles Brewster (120-pound) and Northgate’s Cameron Prevost (170) each finished second  in their respective tournaments.

Also for Newnan  Tristan Kenzierski (113) was sixth and Yates Goodall (106) seventh.

In the 138-pound division, Newnan’s Cale Goss beat East Coweta’s Jasen Higgens for fifth place.

Newnan’s Jacob Miller  (145) was seventh.

East Coweta’s Aryaan Adams was in contention for a fifth-place finish against Rockdale’s Christopher McCollum in 152-pound division.

In the 160-pound division, Newnan’s Josh Smith advanced to the fourth-place match against Tift County’s Bronson Lott. East Coweta’s Dylan Spellios was in the eighth-place match against Cameron Sparks.

East Cowtea’s Gavin Scott (182) was in the eighth-place match against Lowndes Wyatt Kinchens.

Newnan’s Carson Knight and East Coweta’s Alex Derico (195) and  Newnan’s Cody Harris and Newnan’s Titus Aun (220) were set to compete for eighth place.

East Coweta’s Evan Fields (280) was in the fourth-place match against Rockdale’s Edward Pollard.

Also for  Northgate’s Tyler Walters (12o) was sixth and Billy Kilgore (145) was in the eighth-place match against Peter Phan.
