MAJ (Ret) Herbert C. “Curt” Chancey, Jr., 80, of Cornell, Wisc., passed peacefully into the Lord’s arms with family by his side Friday, January 26, 2018 at HSHS Saint Joseph’s Hospital in Chippewa Falls, Wisc.
Curt, son of Herbert Sr. and Loree (Minchu) Chancey, was born January 18, 1938, in Jacksonville, Fla. His family later moved to Daytona Beach, Fla. where he enjoyed living the beach life. Curt graduated Mainland High School in 1955 where he was a competitive swimmer and worked as a local lifeguard.
He married Alice R. Giles of Chattanooga, Tenn. on December 28, 1964.
Curt enrolled in college and later entered active duty with the U.S. Army on March 20, 1964. He was a graduate of the Infantry Officer Candidate School, Army Airborne School and Army Ranger School at Fort Benning, Ga.
Captain Chancey served two tours in Vietnam as a Company Commander with Alpha Co. 3rd Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment. Curt was shot twice during his tours. He received many military awards and commendations for his service to include the Purple Heart, Silver Star and Bronze Star with V device. More than anything, Alpha Gator 6 was proud of his men and loved each and every one of them and their families.
Curt retired from the U.S. Army at Fort McPherson, Ga. after 30 years of active service. He then worked for the Department of the Army as a civilian at U.S. Army Forces Command, Fort McPherson, Ga., where he served as a Worldwide Military Operations Deployment Specialist until his retirement.
Curt and his family settled in Senoia, Ga. where they enjoyed quiet country living. He enjoyed being a “Horse Show Dad,” travelling around the Southeast with his youngest daughter, who was very active in the sport of dressage.
Curt also enjoyed getting together with his old war buddies, and being an active member of the 22nd Infantry Association. Curt lived at home until his health began to fail many years ago.
Curt is survived by his children, Herbert “Herb” (Martha) Chancey III of Quincy, Fla., Robin (Steve) Mills of New Market, Ala., Ben (Lynn) Chancey of Lake City, Fla., Susan (Mark) Stewart of Fort Worth, Texas, Leslye (Gunnar) Chambers of Jim Falls, Wisc., Martha Louise (Melvin) Barnes of Hephzibah, Ga., and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Curt is preceded in death by his wife, Alice, and his parents.
Services will be held at a later date with burial and full military honors at Fort Mitchell National Cemetery, Fort Mitchell, Ala.
