East Coweta soccer teams officially opened respective seasons with hard-fought 2-2 ties against LaGrange lineups equally coming off state-playoff appearances in 2017.
Lady Indians co-captain Ellie Watson scored a game-tying goal on a 25-yard blast into the top-left corner of the net in the 68th minute to go with an assist on teammate Emily Darnell’s opening tally that pushed an early 1-0 lead just six minutes into the contest.
Sophomore Caroline Thompson and senior captain Maggie Asbell put LaGrange on top at halftime with tallies just six minutes apart. But a veteran East Coweta defense held from there in front of first-year starting keeper Abbie Chaves, who steps in goal this year following the graduation of All-County standout Sam Hoffman.
In the boys game, teams went to halftime deadlocked at 0-0 despite the Indians maintaining possession throughout the opening 40 minutes of play.
Forwards Noah Shumake and Andrew Wilson had tallies for the Indians, who return the bulk of last year’s starting lineup in front of newcomer Sam Briggs in goal following the graduation of three-year starter Brian Green.
