Former Newnan basketball player Alfredda Abernathy was inducted into the Coweta County Sports Hall of Fame Saturday.
She is presented a plaque from Otis Jones III, chairman of the selection committee. Abernathy played basketball at Newnan High School from 1971-74. She went on to play college basketball at Alabama State where she is still the school’s leading scorer.
She was also selected to the 1980 United State Olympic basketball team, but the United State boycotted that year. She also played two years of professional basketball in the WBL.
She retired from the Montgomery School System in 1971 after 31 years in education.
Former Newnan football player Willie Greenway, Jr was inducted into the Coweta County Sports Hall of Fame on Saturday.
He is presented a plaque from Otis Jones III, chairman of the selection committee. Greenway was a three-year starter for the Cougars at linebacker before earning a scholarship to the University of Tennessee- Chattanooga.
As a senior at Newnan, he was named the team’s Defensive Player of the Year.
He also was the winner of the Golden Helmet Award. He also played for the North All-Star team that was coached by Newnan head coach Max Bass.
Greenway lettered two years at UT-Chattanooga and played one year of semi-pro football.
