So cold, yet so bold

Members of the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority wave to the crowd along Jackson Street during the annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. parade in downtown Newnan.

The cold temperatures and blustery winds did not stop people from lining the streets of downtown Newnan on Saturday to watch the 31st annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. parade.

Grand Marshal Winston Dowdell, a longtime Coweta County educator and current member of the Coweta County Board of Education, led the parade.

This year’s theme was “Honoring the Dream through Commitment, Education and Service.”

The parade included several floats, dance numbers performed by area fraternities and sororities, praise dancers, and musicians from the Newnan High School, East Coweta High School and Northgate High School marching bands.

The event is put on each year by the sisters of Chapter 483, Order of the Eastern Star.

Proceeds from the parade benefit the organization’s scholarship fund.
