Starr’s Mill sweeps Newnan in non-region basketball

The Newnan girls and boys basketball teams were swept Friday night at home in a non-region doubleheader against Starr’s Mill.

Starr’s Mill 53, Newnan 50 (boys): The Newnan Cougars fought back from a 10-point deficit in the fourth quarter and had a chance to tie the game and send it into overtime with a 3-pointer, but the shot fell off the mark, giving the Panthers the victory.

Starr’s Mill led 13-6 at the end of the first quarter, but Newnan clawed its way back to take a 24-22 lead at the end of the second quarter.

Harrison Drake had two 3-pointers during the second quarter and Luis Gonzalez one for the Cougars.

Starr’s Mill grabbed the momentum in the third quarter, pushing the lead to 33-27 after holding the Cougars to just three points.

Early in the fourth quarter, the Panthers pushed the lead to double digits, but Newnan again closed the gap on a pair of 3-point jumpers by Gonzalez, setting the stage for the dramatic finish.

Keith Williams led the the way with 15 points for Newnan.Tay Watson had 11.

Newnan fell to 1-4 overall. Starr’s Mill improved to 4-1.

Starr’s Mill 60, Newnan 44 (girls): Starr’s Mill led 13-8 at the end of the first quarter and 26-23 at the break.

Jekeria Strickland connected on three 3-pointers for Newnan in the second quarter to help keep the Lady Cougars in the game.

Starr’s Mill led 38-35 after three quarters. Strickland continued to have the hot hand for Newnan, hitting two three pointers. Janyah Stargell converted back-to-back steals in the third quarter into baskets for the the Lady Cougars.

Her layup midway through the quarter gave Newnan a brief lead at 27-26. It didn’t last long as Starr’s Mill scored the next five points. A 3-pointer by Ashtyn Lally  pushed Starr’s Mill's lead to 31-27.

Starr’s Mill put the game out of reach in the fourth quarter, holding Newnan to just nine points.

Strickland led Newnan with 20 points. Lally also had 20 points for Starr’s Mill.

Westlake 84, East Coweta 76 (boys):

ATLANTA - The East Coweta Indians basketball team rallied from a 16-point deficit to get close in the fourth quarter, but the Westlake Lions hit their free throws down the stretch to get an 84-76 win Friday night in Region 2-AAAAAAA action in The Lions Den.

Westlake got its first win of the season to improve to 1-2 overall and 1-0 in the region. EC dropped its third straight game to fall to 4-3, 0-1.

The Lions went on a 20-5 run to lead 27-15 after the first quarter, but EC played better in the second quarter and only trailed 43-35 at halftime.

EC trailed big until midway through the fourth when they rallied to cut the Lions' lead to 78-74 with 43.7 seconds left in regulation. But Westlake outscored EC 6-2 to get the win.

Brandon Stroud led EC with 28 points, followed by Derrick Emory with 16 and Jamal Kennedy with 13.

Westlake 82, East Coweta 32 (girls):

The Lady Lions of Westlake led 24-11 after the first quarter and 45-19 at the half, rolling to a huge region win over the EC Lady Indians Friday evening.

Miaa Berry led EC (3-4, 0-1 region) with 10 points. Westlake (4-0, 1-0) had four players in double figures, led by Taylor Hosendove with 12 points.
