Nothing goes better during the holidays than a high school basketball tournament, and starting next Wednesday, both the Newnan boys and girls varsity teams will host their annual Total Wireless Holiday Classic.
The three-day event features eight teams from Georgia and Alabama in both the girls and boys fields.
On the girls side tournament, Newnan, East Coweta, LaGrange, North Cobb, North Clayton, Hiram, Auburn and Grayson will play.
Trinity Christian, New Manchester, Greater Atlanta Christian, North Clayton, Lovejoy, Auburn and Redan will join Newnan in the boys’ half of the event.
Wednesday’s girls games feature North Cobb vs. Auburn at 9 a.m, East Coweta vs. Grayson at noon, LaGrange at North Clayton at 3 p.m. and Newnan vs Hiram at 6 p.m.
In boys games on Wednesday, New Manchester takes on Auburn at 10:30 a.m., Trinity takes on Redan at 1:30 p.m., Greater Atlanta Christian plays North Clayton at 4:30 p.m. and Newnan finishes the first day of the tournament at 7:30 p.m. against Lovejoy.
In Thursday’s girls action, Auburn takes on East Coweta at 10:30 p.m., North Clayton plays North Cobb at 1:30 p.m., Hiram plays LaGrange at 4:30 p.m., and Newnan plays Grayson at 7:30 p.m.
The boys half of the tournament tips off at 9 a.m. Thursday with Auburn facing Greater Atlanta Christian, North Clayton playing Trinity at noon, Lovejoy playing New Manchester at 3 p.m. and Newnan playing Redan at 6 p.m.
On the final day of the tournament, the girls bracket includes LaGrange taking on Grayson at 9 a.m. North Cobb taking on Hiram at noon, East Coweta playing North Clayton at 3 p.m. and Newnan playing Auburn at 6 p.m.
Boys action on the final day includes Trinity playing Lovejoy at 10:30 a.m., Greater Atlanta Christian playing Redan at 1:30 p.m., New Manchester taking on North Clayton at 3:30. The tournament concludes with Newnan taking on Auburn at 7:30.
The tournament gives teams a chance to play several days of basketball before stepping back in the region for key games the final two months of the season.
East Coweta boys set to play in Florida: The Indians are headed to the Sunshine State after Christmas to play in the Northwest Florida Shootout.
East Coweta will play Choctawhatchee High School in the Fort Walton Beach event.
It will be a major challenge for head coach Royal Maxwell’s 7-5 team. Choctawhatchee High School enters the game with a 7-0 record.
East Coweta will be trying to rebound from a 68-60 loss to Sandy Creek in its last outing.
