Mrs. Merilyn Mortensen, 92, of Newnan, Ga. passed away Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2017.

She was born April 7, 1925 in Birmingham, Alabama to the late Jesse L. Ginn and Lillian K. Ginn. She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Frede Mortensen; grandson, Jeremy E White; and great-grandchildren Emilee Brook and Isabella Brook.

Merilyn grew up in East Point, Ga. She received an associate degree from Georgia State and later worked for the Georgia State Highway Department, followed by employment with Eastern Airlines.

She met – through a blind date – and married the love of her life, Frede, in 1947 shortly after he had immigrated from Denmark. She taught him the English language and assisted him in the formation of his company, Mortensen Custom Furniture, Inc. in East Point.

She was a homemaker and lifelong member of the Methodist Church.

Survivors include children, Karen White of Marietta, Lisa Thompson (Wesley) of Alpharetta, Fred Mortensen (Chere) of Sharpsburg, Winifred Mortensen of Newnan; sister, Helen Mitchell of Conyers; grandchildren, James White, Marlee Brook (Brian), John White, Dustin Mortensen (Masha), Suzanne Thompson, Skylar Mortensen; great-grandchild, Khloe Brook.
The family extends warm thanks for the loving care provided over the last three years by Tierra Hand, Marilyn Davis and Sheila Gibson.

A funeral service will be held in the chapel of McKoon Funeral Home in Newnan on Friday, December 29, 2017 at 11 a.m. with visitation prior to the service from 10-11 a.m.
