Mrs. Doris Ann Garner, 85, of Newnan, passed away Tuesday, December 20, 2017 at Wesley Woods.

She was born March 8, 1932 in Dunn, Texas to the late Samuel Oscar Worthington and Bernice Benton Worthington. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Richard Bell Garner, and her brother, Charles Oscar Worthington.

Doris grew up in Texas and after her father’s death when she was eight years old, she and her siblings lived in the Masonic Home and School of Texas. She graduated from high school at the age of 16 as the valedictorian of her class.

After graduating from high school, she worked and paid her way through college graduating with a bachelors degree from North Texas State University. 

Doris was a self starter her entire life and was constantly teaching herself new subjects. She was an avid bridge player who taught herself how to play at the age of 18.

The memorial service is Friday, December 22, 2017 at 3 p.m. in the Thompkins Auditorium at Wesley Woods of Newnan. There will be a private family burial at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

Survivors include children, Daphne Duncan, Michael Garner, Richard Garner; grandchildren, Katie Duncan Taylor, Christina Garner Reed, Jared Garner, Timothy Harlow; great-grandchild, Emerson Claire Reed; siblings, Opal Lord, Sammie Wigley, Audrey Taylor.
