States need to rein in federal government

Dear Governors and State Legislators in The United States of America:

I write to you as an American who is watching the impotence and corruption in the United States Congress and the utter chaos in the White House. With at least two of our three branches of Federal government infected with the virus of self-interest, and the third showing symptoms, it is of critical importance to the health of this country that we consider courses of action to treat this communicable disease before the pandemic kills The United States of America.

It is time for our leaders in state governments to prescribe and administer an antiviral that would reduce the spread of this contagion, using Article V's provision to deliver the cocktail of reforms – including campaign finance and lobbying reforms, shorter term limits, and election reforms – to our congress whose members are too sick and too weak to administer it for themselves.

Article V of our Constitution provides for Amendments to be made via an Article V Convention: "The Application of the Legislatures of two thirds of the several States, shall call a Convention for proposing Amendments, which… shall be valid to all Intents and Purposes, as part of this Constitution, when ratified by the Legislatures of three fourths of the several States, or by Conventions in three fourths thereof..."

Never has the time been more ripe for the governors and state legislatures to organize and mount a successful campaign to protect its citizens against the corruption in congress. With the vast majority of Americans fed up with congressmen on both sides of the aisle taking money from lobbyists representing big business, special interests and wealthy families and protecting their benefactors' interests over the American citizenry and then, helping themselves to perks that they deny working Americans, we are seeking one of a few means of redress left available to us.

It is time to send a clear and decisive message to the members of our Washington Congress, that those who continue to ignore the will of the American people will be held accountable by the elected officials at the state levels of government who still hold Americans' best interests as a guiding principle in your service. Please act now to fashion an Amendment to protect the American people from this disease before our nation succumbs to it.
