Airbnb is becoming more popular and the city of Newnan will be addressing the possibility of local regulation of the service.

Airbnb is an online marketplace and hospitality service, enabling people to lease or rent short-term lodging including vacation rentals, apartment rentals, homestays, hostel beds or hotel rooms, according to its website.

Last month, The Newnan-Coweta Board of Realtors hosted an informational session for real estate agents about Airbnb. Dean Smith of Newnan’s planning and zoning department, gave a preface of possibilities. Smith said the city has been researching regulations of Airbnb and how to protect the rights or property owners.

Smith said the growth of the city has contributed to the popularity of Airbnb. There have not been many complaints as of yet, but the city wants to address the issue before any serious problems arise. Some of the major issues that may arise include safety and protecting the property rights of neighboring property owners.

Airbnb regulation will be a topic of discussion at the Nov. 14 Newnan City Council meeting. The meeting begins at 2:30 p.m. and is is held in the Richard A. Bolin Council Chambers at city hall on LaGrange Street.
