Wednesday night the Northgate wrestling team had its home opener when it hosted a duals meet with the Lions from Martin Luther King, the Panthers from Langston Hughes, and last year’s second-place state finishers, the Spartans from South Paulding.
With only four varsity wrestlers, MLK High School gave the Vikings their best effort, but pins by team captain Camron Prevost, wrestling up a weight class to 195 pounds David Watson at 220, and Brian Bordeaux at heavyweight, clinched the 75-6 victory.
The Vikings faired similarly against the Panthers from Langston Hughes as early first-period pins by Billy Kilgore at 152 pounds and Michael Hoerger at 160 pounds started the ball rolling for the Vikings.
A bye at 170 pounds followed by pins from Prevost at 182 pounds, Ryan Loving at 195 pounds and David Watson at 220 pounds gave the Vikings a comfortable lead.
As the lineup rolled to the lower weight classes, a pin by Tyler Walters at 120 pounds and several bye matches left the Vikings with a 72-9 team win.
The final matchup of the evening for the Vikings would not prove so easy. The Spartans came out strong and dominated until the seventh match when Blake Trammell managed a first-period pin at the 106-pound weight class.
Although the Vikings wrestled with everything they had, it wasn’t until the final match when Team Captain Billy Kilgore pinned his opponent in the second period that Northgate secured its win against the Spartans.
The Vikings varsity and junior varsity teams go in different directions this weekend as the varsity team travels west to Carrollton High School for a Duals Tournament and the junior varsity team heads south to Pike County High School.
