Vikings playoff hopes swept away

The Northgate volleyball team’s season came to an end Thursday night with a 3-0 loss against visiting Centennial.

Northgate entered the first round of the Class AAAAAA tournament as the Region 5-AAAAAA champs after beating Douglas County last week.

It was the Lady Vikings’ third straight region championship.

Centennial moves on to play the winner of the Apalachee and Sequoyah match next week.

Locally, Newnan and East Coweta are still alive in the state volleyball tournament and will play their second-round matches next week in the Class AAAAAAA portion of the tournament.

Newnan, which won the Region 2-AAAAAAA tournament last Saturday, went into the first round of the tournament as a No. 1 seed, and swept Woodstock Wednesday.

East Coweta also earned a sweep over Lassiter.

Newnan now stays home to play Kennesaw Mountain, while East Coweta has a long trek to the Georgia coast for a game against Camden County.

Kennesaw Mountain advanced to meet Newnan with a victory over West Forsyth, while Camden County beat North Paulding.

East Coweta and Newnan’s second-round games are set for next Tuesday.
