The Newnan Cougars softball team advanced to the second round of the Class AAAAAAA tournament with a sweep against visiting Colquitt County.
The Lady Cougars won the first game 6-3 and finished off the sweep with a 4-2 victory in the nightcap.
Newnan now advances to play the winner of the North Cobb and Etowah series starting next Wednesday.
It will be a best-of-three series.
In the first game, Newnan fell behind 1-0 in the top of the first inning, but regrouped with six runs in the bottom of the third.
From there, the Lady Cougars never looked back.
Offensively in game one, Kaylen Madrey had the hot hand, finishing with two RBIs.
She also finished with two hits, including a double.
Ansley Houston also had a double.
Colquitt put together a small rally in the top of the sixth when it cut the lead to 6-3.
They also loaded the bases in the top of the seventh before the Lady Cougars pitched out of the danger to secure the win.
Addie Andrews finished the game with three strikeouts for the Lady Cougars.
Newnan and Colquitt each scored one run in the first inning, but the Lady Cougars took control in the second game with three runs in the fourth inning on Ansley Houston’s three-run homer in the top of the fourth to give the Cougars a 4-1 lead.
Houston also pitched the second game for the Lady Cougars.
She allowed just two hits.
Hailey Bloom drove in the first run of the game for the Lady Cougars.
Colquitt County added a run the bottom of the fourth in what turned out to be the final score of the game.
