Players to Watch: Westlake — CB Miles Sims, Sr.; RB Gino Appleberry, Sr.; LB Paul Jones, Sr.

East Coweta — RB Gerald Green, Jr.; QB Christian Reid, Sr.; OT Evan Fields, Sr.; LB Landon Matthews, Sr.

What to Know: After five non-region games to open the season, both East Coweta and Westlake begin competition in Region 2-AAAAAAA with the hopes of earning one of the four playoff spots. Both teams enter the region opener after having last week off. Westlake and East Coweta have both put up some big offensive numbers this season. The Indians opened the season with a loss against Lovejoy, but in their last four games, all victories, the Indians have scored at least 36 points.

What we Think: East Coweta 35, Westlake 28

Wheeler (2-3) at Newnan (1-4)

Today, 7:30 p.m. at Drake Stadium

Coaches: Wheeler — Michael Collins (13 seasons, 8 at Wheeler, 62-71); Newnan — Chip Walker (13 seasons, first at Newnan, 128-30)

What to Know: Both Newnan and Wheeler open the region schedule tonight in hopes of turning around what has been a disappointing season for both squads. Wheeler’s only victories have come against Centennial and South Cobb, while Newnan’s lone win was against Washington High School.

What we Think: Newnan 21, Wheeler 14

Northgate (3-3 overall, 2-2 Region 5-AAAAA) at New Manchester (2-4 overall and 1-3 Region 5-AAAAA)

Today, 7:30 p.m. in Douglasville

Coaches: Northgate — Kesley Dalrymple (First season, 3-3); New Manchester — Michael Moore (2 seasons, 5-6)

Series Record: Northgate leads 1-0

Last Meeting: Northgate 54-6 (2016)

New Manchester — QB Jahrell Pope, Sr.; LB Tahj Smith, Jr.; DB Michael Russell, Sr.; DT Jamar Brashears, Sr.

What to Know: After dropping two Region 5-AAAAAA contests to Douglas County and Alexander, the Vikings really can’t afford to let this region contest slip away if they hope to land on of the region playoffs spots, especially with games against Hughes and Mays still on the schedule. They face a New Manchester that is improved from last year, but still struggling. Like, Northgate, New Manchester also beat Creekside for its only Region 5-AAAAAA win.

What we Think: Northgate 28, New Manchester 14

Holy Spirit (1-4 overall, 0-2 in GISA Region 1-AAA at Trinity Christian (5-2, 2-0 in GISA Region 1-AAA)

Trinity — QB Zach Seymour, Jr.; RB Luke Vermilya, Sr.; LB Sam Cotton, Sr.; WR Kyle Riesselmann, Jr.; DB Sharmari Reid, Soph.

What to Know: The Trinity Lions might have stumbled in their first two games, losing to Deerfield-Windsor and Bulloch Academy, but the Lions have definitely got their game going in a positive direction now after five straight wins, including three shutouts.

What we Think: Trinity 48, Holy Spirit 7
