The Etowah High School Lady Eagles put an end to the Newnan Lady Cougars softball season Wednesday night with a sweep in the Sweet 16 of the Class AAAAAAA tournament.

Etowah won the first game 9-3 and then took the nightcap 15-4.

After Newnan scored two runs in the first inning to take control of the second game, Etowah rallied with six runs in the second and never looked back.

The Lady Eagles led 9-2 after scoring three runs in the third.

Although Newnan cut the lead to 9-3 after scoring a run in the fourth, Etowah put the game out of reach with six runs in the top of the sixth.

The Lady Eagles outhit Newnan 16-3 in the second game.

Newnan managed one final run in the bottom of the sixth, but the contest was called at the end of that inning by the mercy rule.

Ansley Houston had two hits for the Lady Cougars in the second game, and Danielle Curlee drove in three runs for Newnan.

Houston struck out one and Addie Andrews four in the second game.

In the first game, Etowah took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning before the Lady Cougars scored twice in the top of the third for their only lead of the game.

The momentum didn’t last long as Etowah scored five times in the bottom of the third. Etowah then added some insurance in the bottom of the five to push the lead to 9-2.

Newnan attempted to rally in the top of the seventh but scored just one time.

Kaylen Madrey finished the game with three hits to pace the offense for Newnan. Hailey Bloom and Houston each had an RBI for Newnan.

Andrews allowed seven hits, struck out four and walked two.
