The Newnan Cougars won consecutive games for the first time all year, defeating the Campbell Spartans 30-16 Friday night in Region 2-AAAAAAA play in Smyrna.
The Cougars (3-4 overall), who had a big home win over Wheeler last week, defeated the Spartans on the road to remain in first place in the region standings at 2-0. Friday's victory was also Newnan's first road win of the season.
After trailing Campbell 9-3 in the second quarter, Newnan scored 20 unanswered points to take a 23-9 halftime lead. Woody Waters and Mautavier Parks scored rushing TDs, and P.J. Harris had a TD catch for the Newnan scores in the second quarter. Waters had a receiving TD as well Friday.
Campbell got a third-quarter TD to cut the Newnan lead to 23-16, but Cougars freshman Bryson Moss scored a late TD for the final margin of 30-16.
“This was a good win for us. We didn’t play extremely well tonight, but we got the win and we’re glad to get it,” said Cougars head coach Chip Walker. “We’ve still got a lot of things to clean up, but we’re proud of the guys for their effort. They are excited about being 2-0 in the region.”
