Here is a look at local college football players who made contributions to their teams last week:

Albany State: Former Newnan High School quarterback Chancellor Johnson is off to a fast start with the 2-0 Rams. Johnson has thrown four touchdowns, including three in the team’s 20-7 victory over Tuskegee University last week. He has also rushed for 92 yards. Albany State is ranked 16th in the latest NCAA Division II Coaches’ poll. The Rams take on North Greenville Saturday at home at 7 p.m. before traveling to play 17th-ranked West Georgia in Carrollton in two weeks.

Auburn: Redshirt Senior and former Newnan Cougar Tray Matthews and his Auburn Tigers dropped a 14-6 decision on the road last Saturday to defending national champion Clemson. Matthews, however, finished the game with five tackles. They host Mercer this Saturday at 4 p.m.

Georgia Southern: Former East Coweta football player DeMarcus Godfrey, a senior at Georgia Southern, has played in both games so far for the Eagles, carrying the ball twice for five yards. He has also lined up on the defensive side of the ball and has two tackles. Georgia Southern (0-2) has lost to Auburn and New Hampshire to open the season. They are off this week, but play at Indiana in two weeks.

Mercer: Former Northgate running back and current Mercer senior Alex Lakes has rushed for 68 yards on 10 carries as the squad lost its Southern Conference opener 28-27 to Wofford last week. But the Bears are 1-1 on the season. Mercer travels to Auburn this week for a 4 p.m. kickoff.

Virginia Tech: Redshirt senior Brandon Facyson, who played high school football at Northgate, has appeared in both games this season for the Hokies, who beat West Virginia 31-24 and Delaware 27-0. Facyson has one tackle this season. Virginia Tech travels to East Carolina this week for a 3:30 p.m. kickoff.
