Municipal elections will be held this November, and candidates for city council seats in Coweta’s cities and towns will qualify starting Aug. 21.

Council seats are up in every Coweta municipality, including Palmetto and Chattahoochee Hills. Qualifying is Aug. 21 through 23, but hours vary depending on the city.

Candidates for most cities qualify with that respective city, but candidates for the towns of Moreland, Turin and Haralson qualify with Coweta Elections Superintendent Jane Scoggins at the Coweta Board of Elections office, in the basement of 22 East Broad St., Newnan.

City council races won’t be the only issues on the ballot Nov. 7.

All Coweta County voters are eligible to vote on the proposed extension of the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax, and voters in Grantville will see a ballot question.

Grantville residents will be asked to approve extending the current four-year terms of Mayor Doug Jewell and Council members Ruby Hines and Willie Kee by one year.

The change will put future Grantville city elections on odd-numbered years only, with the mayor and two council seats being elected in one cycle and the two remaining seats in the other cycle. Currently, some city elections are held on even-numbered years.

The change requires approval by Grantville residents because it is a amendment to the city’s charter.

For general questions about the election, contact the Coweta Board of Elections at 678-854-0015 or the Coweta Voter Registration Office at 770-254-2615.
