Newnan’s Carson Vaughn and Ryan Huber are among a group of nearly 100 golfers who are competing this week in the annual Georgia Amateur.
The four-round tournament teed off Thursday at the West Lake Country Club in Augusta. After the first round, Vaughn finished in an 11-way tie for 32nd after shooting a 1-over-par 72.
Huber is one of 19 golfers tied for 74th after shooting a 4-over 75.
Vaughn had two birdies on the front nine, including his first on the par-5, second hole. He also birdied the par-3 eighth hole.
His final birdie of the day came on the par-5 11th hole. Vaughn gave back some shots during the his first round with a bogey on the par-4 seventh hole and a triple bogey on the par-4 16th.
Vaughn played steady golf the rest of the way, shooting par on the remaining 13 holes.
Huber struggled on the front nine with bogeys on the second, fourth, seventh and fifth holes. His best golf came on the back nine when he birdied the 10th and 14th hole.
Huber shot par on the 11th, 12th, 13th and 16th holes before back-to-back bogeys on 17 and 18.
Huber begins his round on the 10th hole at 8:20 a.m. Vaughn gets a later start on his second round, teeing off on the 10th hole at 1:20.
Twenty golfers ended their first round under par with Will Rogers grabbing the first round lead at 5-under par.
Chris Waters, Jared O’Kelley and Tre Lamb are tied for second and just one stroke back at 4-under par.
