A man with outstanding warrants for sexual battery and child molestation is back in jail after he was allegedly shot and attempted to hide from police.

On Sunday evening, officers from the Newnan Police Department were dispatched to the area of Pinson Street in reference to a gunshot victim. Witnesses told police they saw the male leave the area on foot after exiting a vehicle that dropped him off, according to Deputy Chief Mark Cooper.

Police began a search of the neighborhood in hopes of locating the victim, identified as Ralph Maurice McDowell. He was found a short while later at a nearby house on Hardaway Street.

According to Cooper, McDowell told police he had been shot in the leg by an unknown person. He did not disclose when or where the shooting occurred.

McDowell was taken by ambulance to Grady Memorial Hospital where he was medically cleared and transported to the Coweta County Jail. The incident remains under investigation.
