Ms. Annie Gunn, 87, of LaGrange, Georgia, passed away Wednesday, July 5, 2017 at Newnan Health and Rehab.

She was born October 26, 1929 in LaGrange to the late Mr. And Mrs. Joseph P. Gunn. She is survived by her brother, Dr. Willie D. Gunn of Swainsboro, Georgia and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Immediately after graduating from LaGrange High School in 1946, Annie was employed by Southern Bell Telephone and Telegraph Company that eventually became AT&T. She worked in Atlanta for several years before moving back to LaGrange and working with Southern Bell there. She worked as a telephone operator before becoming a technical associate, which was typically a man’s job at the time. When asked if she were paid the same amount as a man, she always replied, “You bet I was. I made sure of that.”

Annie was a dedicated and loyal member of the Unity Baptist Church in LaGrange, serving her God and church for over 75 years. She also contributed significantly to numerous civic organizations and a variety of charities.

Annie selflessly cared for her mother for many years, as well as her aunt, the twin of her mother. She also helped care for her older sisters when they needed her.

Annie had a variety of outside interests. She fervently pursued her interest in investment banking, becoming highly knowledgeable and very successful in the field. She enjoyed reading a wide variety of books. She loved animals, caring for her cats and dogs, as well as adopting strays. Somehow, the animals knew how to find her.

She was predeceased by her sisters and their husbands, Dora Dunn (Bill), Mattie Joe Lowry (Julion), Nora Harris (Julian), Gladys Boatner, Ida June Gunn; her sister- in-law, Martha Meeks Gunn; and nephews, Calvin Boatner and Alan Boatner.

The family gives its deepest appreciation to the wonderful staff at Benton House for the care and love they gave Annie. The family thanks the compassionate people at ResCare who helped care for Annie after she broke her hip. Finally, they thank the staff of Newnan Health and Rehab who cared for Annie the last days of her life, continuously encouraging her to try to recover.

Funeral services for Ms. Annie Gunn will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 9, 2017, from Unity Baptist Church in LaGrange with Reverend Doug Bingham officiating. The family will receive friends at the church Sunday from 1-2 p.m. Interment to follow in Shadowlawn Cemetery in LaGrange.

Arrangements are by Hunter-Allen-Myhand Funeral Home in LaGrange.
