Local girls high school lacrosse in 2017 was special this year as Northgate and Newnan qualified for the state playoffs and East Coweta won more games than it had in years.
Leading the way for the Newnan Lady Cougars, who finished second behind Northgate in the area standings, was junior midfielder Mallory Williams. Williams had a monster year in 2017, finishing with 73 goals scored (4 goals per game) and 12 assists on offense.
Williams was also strong defensively – she scooped 55 ground balls, had 10 interceptions, 12 forced turnovers and she won 100 draws. For her stellar efforts on the field, Williams was named the 2017 Newnan Times-Herald Girls Lacrosse Player of the Year.
Williams’ 2017 season was special enough to put her on the list of the top players in the history of Newnan High girls lacrosse. Her 73 goals places her third all-time in program history, while the four goals scored per game is first all-time and her 100 draw wins are third all-time in the history of the program.
“Mallory was our Most Improved Player last year, and she is definitely our Most Valuable Player in 2017,” said Lady Cougars head coach Robert Skinner.
Williams did have some help this season, getting great play from All-County First Team members Kandace Benefield, Sara Dougherty, Scarlet Webb and Amya Woods, who combined to score 157 goals and have more than 27 assists. Defensively, Angelica Powell (29 ground balls) and Savannah Cochran (29 ground balls) also helped the Newnan girls reach the state playoffs, where they fell in the first round to Pope High.
Northgate – the 2017 Girls Lacrosse Coweta Cup champions – had five players on the All-County First Team, including junior midfielder Sydney Tuttle, who led the Lady Vikings with 51 goals scored, 42 ground balls and 61 draws won.
“Sydney can play anywhere on the field at any time,” said Northgate head coach Shelley Langston.
“She is one of the best midfielders to ever come through Northgate.”
Defensively, Northgate junior goalkeeper Kayla Hamlett had 147 saves and had a .552 save percentage, which according to the high school sports website MaxPreps, was tops in the county and tops for all area goalkeepers.
Tuttle and Hamlett also received help from First Team offensive players Callie DuBose (39 goals) and Christina Sierra (33 goals) and First Team defender Morgan Robertson. The Lady Vikings were area champs as well as Coweta Cup champs, but they lost in the first round of the state playoffs to Roswell High.
East Coweta didn’t make the state playoffs this season, but the Lady Indians won six games, which is more than they’ve won in several years. They were led by All-County First-Teamers Adelyn Ryan (37 goals, 4 assists) and Emily Watson (35 goals, 13 assists).
Northgate had five players make the All-County Second Team, while East Coweta had three and Newnan had one.
