Smitherman, Steed nab Player of the Year honors

Jeff Armstrong / The Newnan Times-Herald

East Coweta High sophomore Laney Steed and Newnan High sophomore Ashley Smitherman (13)

Girls soccer players Laney Steed of East Coweta High and Ashley Smitherman of Newnan High had a few striking similarities in 2017.

Both girls scored exactly 38 goals and had exactly 12 assists on the season. Both players were sophomores who led their teams to the Class AAAAAAA state soccer playoffs, and, as fate would have it, they both will face each other in a county rivalry match for the next two years.
For their stellar accomplishments on the pitch this year, both Smitherman and Steed were selected as the 2017 Newnan Times-Herald Co-Players of the Year.
Even with so many outstanding younger players making an impact in Coweta County high school girls soccer, these two players will make it hard for anyone else to unseat them for top honors.
Smitherman and Steed boast tremendous toughness, speed and vision to get the job done, and they are good leaders for being younger players. In fact, Steed was one of three sophomore captains for the Lady Indians this season.
Both players also capped good seasons in 2017 after stellar on-field campaigns in 2016. Smitherman made the 2016 NTH All-County First Team by scoring 26 goals and getting 14 assists, while Steed was the 2016 NTH Newcomer of the Year with 25 goals and 11 assists. Steed also had a flair for the dramatic, scoring goals in the biggest games of the season last year.
Both players also had help from several of their All-County teammates. EC players Brittany Dunnavant, Ellie Watson, Adriana Garcia and Emily Darnell averaged around eight goals and five assists in 2017, with the freshman Darnell scoring 11 goals and the sophomore Watson getting 11 assists.
Newnan players Adriana Sanchez (15 goals, nine assists), Hannah Marriaga (four goals, 10 assists) and Alyssa Brauchler (six goals) were very good in 2017, helping Smitherman and the Lady Cougars finish second in Region 2-AAAAAAA behind East Coweta’s girls.
East Coweta had six players on the All-County First Team while Newnan and Northgate had three first-teamers each. Trinity Christian had four players named to the All-County First Team. Newnan and Trinity each had four players on the All-County Second Team, followed by Heritage with three and East Coweta and Northgate with two players each.
