A photo taken at the recent Newnan High School graduation was chosen as winner of the first “Best of Dad” photography contest sponsored by The Newnan Times-Herald.
The Father’s Day challenge was open to photographers of all ages and skill levels and included a request for photos that depicted the best of dads across the county, from the most memorable moments to the funniest.
One local family submitted a heartwarming photo with an inspiring story behind it.
“This photo was taken May 25, 2017, at the Newnan High School graduation,” explained Newnan resident Christi Estes via email. The photo shows Rob Estes hugging his son Robert, dressed in cap and gown, at the recent graduation. “It was Rob’s dream to see Robert graduate.”
Estes went on to tell the story many locals have come to know. Rob and Christi Estes are the founders of Can’t Never Could, a local nonprofit created to serve those suffering from cancer or facing adversity in other forms. The foundation was established after Rob was diagnosed with grade IV glioblastoma, an incurable form of brain cancer, in 2013.
“Rob was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer in the first week of Robert’s high school career,” Estes explained. Rob has undergone several brain surgeries in an effort to remove portions of the growing tumor and prolong his life.
“Rob was hospitalized four of the last six weeks and only got out of the hospital a few days before graduation,” Estes said. “This photo captures the pure joy of Rob being able to attend Robert’s graduation.”
More than 100 photos were submitted by community members to the “Best of Dad” contest and several additional outstanding submissions can be found in the Community section of today’s paper. A video slideshow containing all photo entries can also be found online at www.times-herald.com
