East Coweta junior Madison Duffessy (8) scored 29 goals with 9 assists and 52 ground balls this spring and was named the 2017 Newnan Times-Herald Boys Lacrosse Player of the Year.

Boys high school lacrosse in Coweta County had two of the public school teams — East Coweta and Newnan — qualify for the 2017 state lacrosse playoffs.

East Coweta had a banner year overall, thanks in part to junior midfielder Madison Duffessy, who scored 29 goals and also had nine assists and scooped 52 ground balls. Duffessy scored big goals all season long, including three against county and area rival Newnan, to help EC advance in the Coweta Cup tournament. Duffessy’s offensive prowess helped sparked the EC Indians to defeat the Northgate Vikings a week after beating Newnan and recapture the Coweta Cup championship trophy.

For his efforts on the field this season, Duffessy has been named The Newnan Times-Herald Boys Lacrosse Player of the Year.

Indians head coach Nick Crider said Duffessy was the team’s offensive player of the year, and the team needed his offense to capture the second seed in the area standings and a home game in the 2017 state playoffs.

But Duffessy wasn’t alone in that quest. He received help from his teammates, including All-County First Teamers Bailey Brogan (31 goals, 12 assists, 20 ground balls), Billy Ross (9 goals, 2 asts, 66 gbs), and Chandler Perkins (12 goals, 18 asts, 22 gbs). Defensively, EC goalie Devin McCarragher kept the Indians in games with 73 saves on the season.

The Indians fell to the Walton Raiders at home in the first round of the state playoffs.

Newnan may have lost to its rival in the Coweta Cup, but the Cougars still had a great season that culminated in a third place finish and a state playoff game on the road. Tristan Daly was the team’s linchpin, scoring 37 goals along with five assists and 28 ground balls. Daly received help from All-County First Teamers Maurice Johnson (30 goals, 14 asts, 62 gbs), Jack Carroll (20 goals, 9 asts, 68 gbs), Clayton Garmany (20 goals, 11 asts, 48 gbs) and Luke Morgan (16 goals, 18 asts, 35 gbs), among others.

Newnan did defeat Northgate to get a Coweta Cup win, but the Cougars lost to the eventual 2017 state champion Lassiter Trojans in the first round.

Northgate lost its first three games of the season before getting its first win of the year, and they won few games the rest of the year.

Newnan had four players make the All-County Second Team, while East Coweta and Northgate had two players each on that team.
