East Coweta rifle team places second at GHSA tournament

The East Coweta High School Rifle Team placed second at this year’s GHSA State Rifle Finals held at Fort Benning. 

Ware County won the championship with a team score of 1160. East Coweta was second with 1153 and Altoona placed third with 1148.  

East Coweta’s Tanner Whitehead, last year’s individual state champion, placed third this year. 

East Coweta’s Grant Thom placed 14th, Nate Peterson placed 26th, Austin Barber 45th and Josh Holm 47th. 

The team won the state tournament last season after placing second in 2015.

To qualify for the state tournament, East Coweta won its fourth consecutive Area 5 Championship and then defeated Duluth High School in the state sectionals and Southeast Bulloch in the state semifinals. 

Earning individual recognition as Area 5 All-Area Team were Nate Peterson, Whitehead and Barber.  

The team also placed two All-State Team Shooters. Peterson finished with the highest state season average for GHSA while Whitehead finished in second. 

Peterson, a senior, will continue his shooting career at the United States Air Force Academy.
