The LaGrange College baseball team is enjoying a successful season with a 35-4 record.
The Panthers are ranked second in one NCAA Division III poll and third in another.
LaGrange captured the USA South Conference Tournament with a 6-0 win over Piedmont.
Two former Northgate baseball players, outfielder James Poropatic, and pitcher Jonathan Fleckenstein, have contributed to the success.
Both earned a spot on the All USA South Conference First Team.
Poropatic leads the Panthers’ offense with a .388 batting average. He has 13 doubles, four triples, one homer and 26 RBIs.
Fleckenstein’s 1.56 ERA is the lowest on the team. He has a 5-1 record with 41 strikeouts and just four walks. He also has four saves.
In the championship against Piedmont, Fleckenstein entered the game with one out in the ninth and quickly produced two outs, including one on a strikeout.
Poropatic scored a run for the Panthers en route to their win.
LaGrange will now play in the NCAA Division III tournament when it hosts Greensboro in the best-of-three series starting Saturday.
It’s LaGrange’s first trip to the NCAA tournament since 2010.
