Martha Y. Bridges, 89, of Newnan and formerly of Atlanta, died Tuesday, April 18, 2017, in her home.
She was born December 1, 1927, in Atlanta, to Leonard L. Young and Martha Cook Young. She was a 1946 graduate of Girls’ High School in Atlanta and a 1950 graduate of LaGrange College. She married Robert W. Bridges in February, 1950, and he preceded her in death.
Mrs. Bridges worked for the federal government for nearly 30 years, beginning at Fort Wainwright in Fairbanks, Alaska, before transferring to Fort Benning in Columbus, Ga. She retired from the Department of Health and Human Services in Atlanta.
Survivors include her daughters, Carol (John) Flood, of Seward, Alaska, Cathy (Doug) Moran, of DeLand, Florida, and Martha (DeVere) Woods, of Terre Haute, Indiana; granddaughters, Rebecca (Dusty) McGrew of Oak View, California, and Laura Moran of Atlanta; great-grandchildren, John and Annie McGrew; sister-in-law, Elaine Stallings Seegar of Hermosa Beach, California; nephews, Michael (Nancy) Stallings of Anchorage, Alaska, and Ronald (Wendy) Stallings of Seward, Alaska; and many wonderful friends who helped make her last few years more enjoyable.
Visitation will be Saturday, April 22, from 12 noon-1:30 p.m at McKoon Funeral Home in Newnan, with a graveside service in Oak Hill Cemetery. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Sacred Journey Hospice Foundation, 138 Peach Drive, McDonough, Georgia, 30253. If you can’t make a donation, be kind to the elderly who don’t have family close by.
