Callis graduates from Marine boot camp

Peter Jacob Landry Callis completed 13 weeks of U.S. Marine Corps basic training at Parris Island, South Carolina. After infantry training, Callis will be stationed at 29 Palms, Calif.

Callis is a 2016 Graduate of Northgate High School. He is the son of Samantha Waskan and the grandson of Bill and Barbara Landry.


West wins health care award at Brenau

Jessica Leanne West of Senoia was among Brenau University students recognized for academic achievement during the university’s Honors Convocation recently.

West, a class of 2017 student majoring in biology, won the Amanda Mills Pre-Professional Healthcare Award, the Honors Graduation Award and the Honors Seminar Award. She is a graduate of East Coweta High School.


Seniors workshop planned at UWG-Newnan

A workshop for senior citizens on Social Security, Medicare and consumer protection will be held at the University of West Georgia-Newnan, 80 Jackson Street in Newnan, on Thursday, May 11 from 9 a.m. to noon.

Hosted by Congressman Drew Ferguson, the workshop will include representatives from Ferguson’s office, the Social Security Administration, the Disability Hearing Office, Disability Determination Services, the GA Cares Medicare Assistance Agency, the Department of Family and Children’s Services and the Georgia Department of Law Consumer Protection Unit.

The event is open to seniors, their families and personnel in the social services field.


Student-Vet Connect 5K set for May 20

The third annual Newnan High School Student-Vet Connect 5K and one-mile fun run will be held Saturday, May 20 beginning at 8 a.m.

Entry fee is $25 for all non-NHS students and $20 for NHS students. T-shirts will be provided for all participants who register by May 5. All proceeds benefit the Veterans Relief Fund of Coweta County, and awards will be given to the top three finishers under age 12 in the fun run and the top three male and female finishers in each age group in the 5K.

Chuck Person to present keynote address at Auburn Club

The Coweta-Fayette Auburn Club will hold its 14th annual social and dinner meeting on Monday, May 15, at the Loft at Due South in Peachtree City with former Auburn University and NBA player and current coach Chuck Person as keynote speaker.

Person played for Auburn from 1982-1986 and led the Auburn basketball team to its first NCAA tournament appearances, including the Sweet 16 in 1985 and the Elite Eight in 1986. He set several records for Auburn basketball, which helped launch his career with the NBA as a fourth overall pick for the Indiana Pacers in 1986.

He played for multiple teams including the Minnesota Timberwolves, San Antonio Spurs, Charlotte Hornets, and the Seattle Supersonics. Nicknamed "The Rifleman," Person joined Bruce Pearl and the Auburn basketball coaching staff in 2014.

The evening will begin with a social hour at 6 p.m., with dinner at 7 p.m. A silent auction and raffle will feature a football signed by Coach Gus Malzahn. Cost is $40 per person and reservations are required. All proceeds benefit the “Whupper Lee” Scholarship fund, which awards an annual scholarship to one incoming Auburn freshman from Fayette or Coweta county.
