The East Coweta baseball team had to put in a little extra effort Tuesday afternoon on the road against Wheeler, but thanks to the 5-4 victory in eight innings, the Indians secured the Region 2-AAAAAA title and will head to next week’s playoffs as the No. 1 seed.
It was the last of three meetings between the two region rivals. Earlier this season, Wheeler knocked off the Indians for their only region loss of the season.
With the win, East Coweta improved to 24-4 overall and 13-1 in the region. Wheeler dropped to 13-15 overall and 10-4 in the region.
For a time on Tuesday, it appeared Wheeler was going to again pull off the upset.
The Wildcats led 1-0 after scoring a run in the bottom of the first, then pushed the lead to 4-0 with three runs in the bottom of the sixth.
However, with East Coweta down to its last at-bat in the top of the seventh, the Indians produced four runs.
Emilio Morales drove in three runs with a double in the top of the seventh inning. Ryan Dyal also had an RBI double in the inning.
They then kept Wheeler from scoring in the bottom of the seventh to send the game into extra innings.
The Indians kept the momentum going in the top of the eighth, getting an RBI from Zack Bruce for the game-winning run.
Three pitchers went to the mound for the Indians, including starter Mason Meyer, who pitched into the sixth and struck out six and walked one.
Cody Rogers picked up the win, pitching 1 ⅔ innings and striking out three. Mason Frady picked up the save for the Indians, striking out two in one inning.
East Coweta and rival Newnan meet for the third time today when the Indians travel to Joe Pope Field for at 5:55 p.m.
