The Alexander High Cougars erupted for four second-half goals to defeat the homestanding Northgate Vikings soccer team 5-2 in Region 5-AAAAAA boys action Thursday evening at Henry Seldon Field.
The Vikings drop to 2-6 overall and 2-2 in region play while Alexander improves to 4-4-1, 3-2.
Northgate played well defensively in the first half, holding the Cougars to a lone goal by Junior Perez for the 1-0 lead at halftime.
It was a different story in the second half. Perez scored his second goal of the match seven minutes into the half for the 2-0 lead and one minute later, Juan Jose Ochoa scored to give the Cougars a commanding 3-0 lead.
The Vikings didn’t hang their heads after the Alexander onslaught. Northgate worked the ball into Alexander territory and Evan Mahr took a long pass and sent a shot under the Cougars’ keeper to cut the lead to 3-1 at the 30:13 mark of the half.
Any momentum Northgate may have garnered was spoiled by Alexander’s Matthew Acha-Morfaw, who scored six minutes later to increase its lead to 4-1.
The Vikings had one last rally in them. Brandon Ribau sent a shot that was deflected by the Alexander keeper, and Ribau’s teammate, Diego Couvillion, sent another kick to the keeper. The ball bounced off the keeper, and Mahr came out of nowhere to head the ball into the back of the net to cut the lead to 4-2.
Arturo Valdes of Alexander scored late to give the Cougars the final 5-2 margin.
The Vikings’ next game is at home against region foe Tri-Cities at 7 p.m. Tuesday for Senior Night.
The Lady Vikings defeated Alexander’s girls 2-1 Thursday night in the late match. Full details will be in Saturday’s Newnan Times-Herald sports section.
