Mathletes from Odyssey Charter School competed in the Annual Mathematics Tournament on the Georgia Southwest State University campus recently.
Odyssey was allowed to bring five scholars from each grade 6-8 to compete against others in their grade levels for the best five scores. More than 100 contestants in each grade have approximately 30 seconds to answer a selected math problem in a sudden death mathematics shoot-out.
The questions continue until only five scholars are left. The last five contestants left standing compete for first through fifth place finishes. All 11 Odyssey Mathletes placed in the top 50 percent of their grade levels.
More than 900 students from all parts of Georgia competed. Odyssey’s Jonah Furukawa tied for sixth place in the Grade 6 division. In a division with 89 other students, Furukawa eliminated 93 percent of the competition before falling out on the last question of the final round.
“That’s a great job by Mr. Furukawa and an outstanding performance by the entire Mathletes Team,” said Principal Scot Hooper.
