The Lee Middle School Math Team earned its fourth consecutive first place finish at the regional MATHCOUNTS competition at the University of West Georgia recent, earning a spot in the state finals.
The team – consisting of Sun Moon, Hyungjoon Jun, Matthew Nix, Minji Kang, Nathan White, Andrew Brown, Michael An, Mary Miller, Lyong-kyong McDonald and Grant Daniel – competed against the 40 students of Lee Middle’s math club to earn their spots on the competition team.
Competition consists of three rounds: Sprint, testing quickness to solve problems; Target, testing problem-solving skills; and Team, testing teamwork abilities. Of the 110 students at the regional competition, Minji Kang took home the top honors as an Individual Competitor with the highest total score.
MATHCOUNTS also includes a high-pressure Countdown Round where competitors must solve mathematics problems in 45 seconds or less, without a calculator and before a fellow competitor gives the correct answer. The top eight individual scorers compete in this round, and three of those top eight finishers came from the Lee Middle School team: Minji Kang, Matthew Nix and Hyungjoon Jun.
Making it through to the final round was Hyungjoon Jun, who took home second place in the Countdown Round.
Sun Moon, Hyungjoon Jun, Matthew Nix and Minji Kang will travel to Georgia Tech on March 20 to compete as the West Georgia Region’s Team at the state competition. Teammates Mary Miller and Andrew Brown will travel with them to compete as West Georgia Individual Competitors.
Brown is the first sixth-grade student the school has ever had to qualify for the state level of the competition.
