Tuesday is election day for the Coweta County School System’s Education Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax.

ESPLOST voting is Tuesday

for voting on the extension of the one-percent sales tax for education projects. The extension of the sales tax is the only item on the ballot. Sample ballots will be available for voters at the polling places before they go to the voting booth.

The ballot language outlines what the proceeds from the five-year tax will be used for. They are: “acquiring, constructing or equipping new school buildings, administration buildings, athletic buildings/facilities and other buildings and facilities useful or desirable in connection therewith; adding to, renovating, repairing, improving and equipping existing school buildings, including, but not limited to, Newnan Crossing Elementary School, Arnall Middle School, Jefferson Parkway Elementary School, Thomas Crossroads Elementary School and Northgate High School, administration buildings, athletic buildings/facilities and other buildings and facilities useful or desirable therewith, including, without limitation, the Central Educational Center and the Nixon Centre for Performing and Visual Arts; acquiring, installing and equipping portable classrooms; acquiring buses and other vehicles; acquiring technology and acquiring land for future facilities.”

The 21-day early voting period for the sales tax referendum wrapped up Friday. Turnout was extremely light – just 764 Cowetans had cast early votes by Friday afternoon.

“In the presidential election we did twice that many in one day,” said Coweta Elections Superintendent Jane Scoggins. She said she’d expected a light turnout, but not that light.

Voters should go to their designated polling place and bring a photo ID. Voters without a photo ID can choose to vote a provisional ballot, and then bring a photo ID to the Coweta Voter Registration Office within 48 hours.
