Trinity teams win, advance in tourney

The Trinity Christian Lions and Lady Lions both won their opening games of the GISA Region 1-AAA Basketball Tournament Tuesday evening at Loganville Christian Academy.

The Lions defeated Dominion Christian 60-34 while the Lady Lions won 55-16 over Atlanta Girls School. The Trinity teams clinched a Class AAA state playoff berth in the process while the season ends for AGS and Dominion Christian’s boys.

The No. 4-seeded Lions (15-9) led No. 5 seed Dominion 24-14 at the half and cruised the rest of the way for the victory. Michael Young had a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds, followed by Jacob Downs with 8 points and 5 rebounds and Pierce Davis with 7 points.

Trinity’s boys will face No. 1 seed Holy Spirit Prep at 5:30 p.m. today. Should the Lions win, they will advance to the region finals where they will take on the Heritage-LCA winner at 8:30 p.m. Friday. If the Lions fall to HSP, they will face the Heritage-LCA loser at 5:30 p.m. Friday.

The No. 3-seeded Lady Lions (17-6) jumped on No. 6 AGS early and won easily. Catherine Skebo led Trinity’s girls with 23 points, followed by Destini De La Cruz with 8 and Abby Bragg with 5 points and 10 assists.

The Lady Lions will face No. 2 seed Holy Spirit Prep at 7 p.m. today. Should the Trinity girls win, they will advance to the region tournament finals where they will take on the Heritage-Bethlehem Christian winner at 7 p.m. Friday. If the Lady Lions fall to the Holy Spirit Prep girls today, they will face the Heritage-BC loser at 4 p.m. Friday.

The Heritage School teams start their region tournament games today, with the Lady Hawks playing Bethlehem Christian at 4 p.m. and the Hawks playing the host school Loganville Christian at 8:30 p.m.
