Police are now filing charges against the mother of an 11-year-old girl who was injured after her 2-year-old sibling fired a gun.
Jennifer Cotton of Newnan is being charged with reckless conduct, according to Lt. Tate Washington with the Newnan Police Department. No arrest has been made at this time.
On Sunday afternoon., officers were dispatched to Number 1 Buffet on 1731 Newnan Crossing Blvd. in reference to a shooting inside the restaurant.
According to police, a 2-year-old was reportedly seen climbing up and down from his seat and going underneath the table. The child allegedly located a handgun in his mother’s purse which had originally been placed inside a zipped compartment inside the purse.
The child was able to remove the firearm from the purse and manipulate the trigger while the firearm was still attached to the holster, firing a single round, according to Washington.
The 11-year-old was taken to Egleston Children Hospital in Atlanta where she remains in stable condition, but is expected to make a full recovery, according to Washington.
Investigators later determined that the 11-year-old girl was struck in the right thigh from a screw that came from the bottom portion of a holster, which contained a 9mm compact semi-automatic handgun.
