I totally agree with Mr. Schaefer's letter that was in Friday's NTH about affordable housing. I know it is nice to help people who are trying to help themselves, but if you want the better things in life, it should be up to you to provide it. In other words, if you don't earn it, you don't deserve it.
We have too many people in this country that think they are owed a living and the nicer things in life just because they exist. I have helped a lot of people in years past when they had an unexpected problem occur, but that doesn't mean I am going to help them the rest of their life.
I saw a good example of what I'm talking about a few years ago when we had some people living close to us who were on welfare. The children were given two tricycles that were left out in the weather during the winter months and left to rust because they didn't pay for them with their own money; it was taxpayers' money. In other words, no personal responsibility.
