It took a little bit of juggling, but the Area 2-AAAAAAA Duals wrestling tournament finally was completed Tuesday afternoon with only East Coweta and Newnan participating for the right to go to this week’s state Duals Tournament in Macon.
What should have been a six-team event was whittled down to just the two local teams as Westlake, Campbell, Wheeler and Pebblebrook pulled out of the event.
East Coweta won the Area 2-AAAAAAA title with a 64-12 victory over their rivals, but both teams will head to Macon with the Indians earning the top seed and Newnan the second seed.
The tournament was supposed to be held on Friday, but the threat of ice and snow postponed the event until Monday, when it was delayed again.
Finally on Tuesday, the Area Duals turned into a two-team event with East Coweta winning 12 of 14 matches.
The Indians picked up pins from Danny Nelson (120 pounds), Aryaan Adams (145), Jason Higgens (152), Jackson Sledd, Gavin Scott (182), Gabe Labar (195), Jalen Smith (220) and Will Underwood (285) to help lead East Coweta to the victory.
East Coweta’s Jake Gabriel (106) won his match 14-4, Durrell Thompson (113) won his 20-5, Jacob Miller (132) won his 15-4 and Garrett Klinger (160) won his 8-6.
Newnan picked up pins from Brennan Johnson (126) and Zach Stevenson (138) for its two wins of the meet.
The double-elimination State Duals begin on Thursday and run through Saturday at the Macon Centreplex.
