Macy’s project helps students practice persuasive writing

Rebecca Leftwich / The Newnan Times-Herald

Gwen Baum of Macy’s, center, traveled to White Oak Elementary School to participate in fifth-graders’ presentations of their persuasive letter project. Each student researched a charity and created a Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade entry model, then wrote a letter explaining why Macy’s should consider including his or her float.

White Oak Elementary School teachers created a memorable way to help their fifth-graders practice persuasive writing skills recently.

Students researched charities and, based on those charities, built models of floats they’d like to see in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Each fifth-grader then wrote a letter pitching his or her idea to the department store giant.

Macy’s Inc. CEO Terry J. Lundgren responded to emails from the school explaining the project and Gwen Baum, vice president and assistant to Lundgren, visited White Oak to participate in an assembly in which some of the fifth-graders presented their projects and read their letters.

“There is a lot of genuine love in that school and a real commitment to the students and education,” Baum said of White Oak Elementary. “Clearly, they care, and it really shows.”

Below are some of the students’ letters:

Dear CEO,

My float is for the American Heart Association. I think my float should be in your parade because it helps people with heart problems. This foundation is dedicated to fight heart disease and strokes. The generosity of their donors is helping people survive. They get to live longer and enjoy a better life! The American Heart Association helps people by donating money to encourage their local, state and federal lawmakers to make changes on important issues such as menu labeling and state health programs, it also has classes on how to save lives by recognizing the signs of heart attack or stroke and how to administer CPR or use an AED, it also educates scientist, doctors and health care providers with up to the date technology dealing with the heart. This charity does so much more, I could keep going on and on but I know we would run out of time! This float could really shine in the parade. You could use this float because it will make more people happy!!! You should pick this float because it's the best out of them all!!! This float is BIG,COOL, and AWESOME!I want you to choose my float because everyone one will like it and mine will be the favorite, but the best thing of all is… we could help save lives!!!

Sincerely,
Avreigh Rutledge

Dear CEO of Macys,

I think that my float should be in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade because my float will sponsor the Children's Hospital and the kids in the hospital will be very happy that they will get to see that they are being sponsored in the parade. The charity I chose was Joey's Toy Box. I chose this charity because some of the kids that are in the hospital can’t come out of the hospital to see the parade because they are sick or they have cancer and can’t go any where. The reason why I want you to pick my float is because you would like it in the parade because it will be big, colorful, and everyone would like it very much. The people of Joey's Toy Box would like it because it would be the theme of Joey's Toy Box and they would like it very much if I did a float on Joey's Toy Box. Joey was a boy who had cancer and after every surgery that he got he would get a toy, but then after one of his surgery there was only two toys left and Joey asked his mom and said, “Would people give a little kid money?” Joey decided that he wanted to help kids who were sick in the hospital. He wanted to make sure there was always a toy available for the children! Although Joey passed away- he still lives on because we still collect toys for sick children in Joey’s name! I hope that you will consider my float for the parade. Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,
Caroline Yeager

Dear Mr. Lundgren,

I have a new idea for a float for your Macy*s Thanksgiving Day Parade. I hope after reading my letter, I can persuade you to add it to the parade next year. The charity I choose to support was ASPCA. I chose this charity because they help save abused animals. Macy's, Inc. could benefit many ways by adding this float to your parade. One way Macy's would benefit is by the people seeing the float, then adopting the dogs. Another way Macy's would benefit is by the people that seeing the float and donating to ASPCA to help save animals. I hope that you will consider my float for the parade next year. Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,
Jena Sechrest

Dear Mr. Lundgren,

I have a new idea for a float for your Macy*s Thanksgiving Day Parade. I hope after reading my letter, I can persuade you to add it to the parade next year. The charity I choose to support was Wounded Warrior. I chose this charity because these people fight for us and when they get wounded they need help. The Wounded Warrior Project (WWP) is made to help people in the Army who got hurt fighting and it was created in 2003. The CEO is Michael S. Linnington in Roanoke, Virginia. WWP has also provided a whole long Track program to help veterans.
Macy*s, Inc. could benefit in many ways by adding this float to your parade. One way Macy*s would benefit is by helping a lot of hurt people who have done so much for our country. I hope that you will consider my float for the parade next year. Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,
Tristan Brown

Dear Mr. Lundgren,

This year I would like to be part of your Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade if you let me. It is a great organization. In this letter I will like to talk to you about UNICEF. UNICEF was created in December 11, 1946 to help children in war-torn Europe, China and the Middle East. UNICEF stands for "United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund." UNICEF saves children's lives. When kids drink dirty water they can die from it if they are under 5 years old. Since 1990 a lot of people have gained access to clean water because of UNICEF. They also help people that have been in floods like people in Chikwawa District, Malawi. UNICEF had helped by giving them tents, milk, food, and medicines. I think if you let me be part of Macy's Day Parade people will get inspired and will want to participate in UNICEF to help people. It will also be great to your Macys Day Parade so more people come from all over the world and would be interested to be part of your Macys day parade and would like to volunteer. They would also like to go to your stores after the parade and you would earn more money.

Sincerely,
Belinda Ramirez Ocampo

To whom it may concern,

I love to wake up in the morning and watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade! When I turn on the TV, I get excited! I was wondering if you could put in my Wounded Warriors float. It would be awesome if you did! Wounded Warriors is a charitable organization that “honors and empowers wounded warriors who incurred a physical or mental injury, illnesses, or wound, co-incident to your military service on or after September 11, 2001“ (from the website). This organization started in 2003, in Jacksonville, Florida. They want to help wounded soldiers. Some people love doing charities, so if they saw it, they may think it's cool. If someone is a part of the Wounded Warriors they will love it! Macy’s would maybe even get more people to see the parade. Also if people saw the Wounded Warriors float they might donate to it. Thank you for listening.

Yours Truly,
Minwoo Yi

Dear Madam,

I love your Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. I watch it every year. I was wondering if you could put my Abby’s Angels Foundation float in your parade. It would be an honor to have my float in my favorite parade of the year. It will help your business by having people shop at your store because you helped a charity, and they would think highly of you. It is for a very good cause. It will help raise money for kids in need of school supplies, AND it will help raise awareness for safe teen driving. If you put my float in the parade it would mean the world to me and everyone in need! Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,
Mikayla Eggen

Dear Mr. Lundgren

I have a new idea for your Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. I hope you will consider putting my float in the parade. And I hope I can persuade you to put my float in the parade next year.
The charity I chose to support was Wounded Warrior homes. I chose this charity because I am thankful for the veterans because they served our country. Also it will make them feel good about themselves. Macy's could benefit in many ways by adding this float to your parade. One way Macy’s would benefit from a Wounded Warriors Homes float is it will encourage veterans to shop at Macy's. Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

Hayden Moore
